Doing Good: Lucy Hale Uses Her Influence To Give Back

by Kelsey Vanderlip / Mar 04, 2021

For International Women’s Day, we at SENREVE wanted to not only celebrate the social economic, cultural and political achievements of women but also support initiatives that continue to fight for gender equality to this day. That’s why we partnered with Lucy Hale to support the Global Fund for Women in its mission to transform power and privilege for a few into equity and equality for all.  As someone who has been involved with myriad causes supporting animal rights, domestic violence awareness, and reproductive rights, Lucy is no stranger to philanthropy. We were inspired by Lucy’s versatility—  she wears many hats as an actress, tv personality, pop/country artist, and philanthropist. She truly encapsulates the multifaceted SENREVE woman. We spoke with Lucy about what it means to be a woman in today’s age and how we can continue to support women and fight for gender equality.

International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality. Lucy and SENREVE vetted a number of partners before landing on Global Fund for Women as the perfect champion of their cause.

1. What will you be celebrating on International Women’s Day? What does this day mean to you as a woman?
In the past century, we as women have come so far in fighting for our equal rights, whether it was getting our right to vote or being taken seriously as a professional, there are so many things to celebrate! But we have more work to do, especially on a global scale. In so many parts of the world, women are still fighting for their freedom, their equality, and their right to an education. Today is about celebrating our accomplishments but also about recognizing that we have so much more to overcome. As a woman in the entertainment industry, I have faced many barriers to achieving my goals based solely on my gender. Female empowerment and gender equality is a cause that’s close to my heart, and I am incredibly proud to support GFW’s efforts.

2. What are some gender rights topics that you’re most passionate about?
I’m supportive of all initiatives related to gender equality— whether its female reproductive rights or supporting LGBTQ rights, I believe all causes are important. What I really admired about the Global Fund for Women was how they approach gender equality. They realize that gender justice extends to racial justice, queer justice, immigration justice, and climate justice. It’s all intersected, and I think it’s important to recognize that.

3. How can we not only empower ourselves but also empower others? What kind of advice would you share?
I love the quote “empowered women empower women.” When women support each other, incredible things happen. I really make an effort in my life to raise other women up, cheer them on, share resources, and learn from each other’s experiences. Helping other women succeed does not take away from my successes but enriches them. I also think it’s important to remember that we should all love and empower ourselves too. Be your own biggest cheerleader— no one is going to sell you like you sell yourself.

4. What can we all do to continue to drive change beyond International Women’s Day?
Speak up. Get involved. Raise awareness. Be bold. We can instill positive change even if it’s not global— of course, I’d love to see a global movement, but I think we often fail to realize that our daily actions can really be impactful in taking a large step towards positive change.
